Churches around the world are being asked to toll their bells 49 times at noon on June 12, 2018 at 12 PM to commemorate the 49 lives lost during the Pulse Nightclub shooting one year earlier.
Churches can register via the 49 Bells website and as new churches throughout the world become involved, their location and church name will be added to the interactive map on the website.
Currently there are churches throughout the United States involved, as well as churches in countries such as Ecuador, Venezuala and more.
Faith communities who worship in a building without a bell can participate in this project by posting the number “49” on their signs.
The idea for ringing the bells was initiated by mothers of the Pulse victims. “Bells are sacred. We toll them for death and we ring them for celebration,” said Maria Wright, mother of Pulse victim Jerry Wright, 31 at the time he was tragically killed. “Many faith traditions use bells as they resound within our innermost being.”
