5 Tips For Apartment Hunting

By Danie B

Everything was all good until my apartment complex decided to raise my rent by $100!

I negotiated and luckily, I talked them into giving me a bigger apartment at a pretty good deal. But then they gave it to someone else! (The nerve of them.)

Needless to say, I need to find somewhere to live, so I’ve been apartment, house, and condo hunting.

Since I’ve been doing this for a little over a month, I feel like I’m a self proclaimed apartment hunting expert. Here are some tips to help you find the perfect place for you.

  1. Ask the right questions – I thought that I needed a two bedroom to house my many visitors, so that’s what I would ask for. Little did I know, some places have den areas that can act as a small bedroom, or larger one bedroom apartments with multiple bathrooms. These options are typically hundreds of dollars less than than two bedroom apartments, so again ask the right questions.
  2. Look for rent bundles – Some places will quote you a price for rent, but not tell that you certain amenity fees will be added, causing that rent price to rise. On the flip side, some places will quote you a rent price, and certain things like water, valet trash and internet will be included in that rent price. Obviously, when rent includes some of your amenities and utilities it helps out.
  3. Know your budget – Sometimes you go in expecting to spend a certain dollar amount, but you get persuaded into spending more. This can seriously put you in a financial bind. FigureĀ out the absolute most you can spend and don’t agree to anything above that number.
  4. Figure out what’s important to you – Do you mind commuting to work? Do you want a spacious home? Do you want to live in a quiet area? Do you prefer to live in a gated community? Typically, the further out you live, the more bang you get for your buck. Also, in an apartment, the top floor is the quietest because no one is living above you. Find out what matters most to you and look for places to meet or come close to that criteria.
  5. Never settle – I am guilty of settling, and I always end up hating the place and finding myself wondering exactly what I am paying for. It’s your money, it’s your comfort zone, and it’s your peace of mind. Search until you find something that you love.
