Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have made a name for themselves over the past two years with their 2012 debut album The Heist and singles “Thrift Shop,” “Can’t Hold Us” and “Same Love.” But despite being nominated for countless GRAMMYs and winning Best New Artist, Best Rap Album for The Heist and Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song for “Thrift Shop” at the GRAMMY Awards this year, many still don’t know what one-half of the group does.
So that half, Ryan Lewis, took to Bryant Park in New York yesterday (June 2) to find out what the world thinks of him for a segment on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
While every person he spoke with knew exactly who Macklemore was and could point out Lewis in a band photo, it took a while for them to recognize that he was Ryan Lewis in the flesh.
“His music is really genuine,” one passerby said of Macklemore. But when asked what Lewis does in the duo, he wasn’t sure. “I don’t really know what he does. I know he’s a package deal though. He comes with Macklemore a lot.”
