I was the lucky gal that got to chat with R5 today. How cute are they?
One big happy family…these kids are going places. Brothers and sister, and one lucky best friend, these guys love what they do.
From ‘N Sync to President Obama, these guys covered all the bases during our talk today.
After taking a little break from work and getting in some hockey playing, brothers Ross, Riker and Rocky Lynch were the first to jump on the phone with me.
Turns out that when they were younger they would put on shows to ‘N Sync songs. “Riker is an ‘N Sync professional,” Rocky revealed. Of course I wanted to know their favorite ‘N Sync songs! “‘Bye, Bye, Bye’ is like the go-to one,” Riker told me me. “But we did ‘Pop’ and we did ‘No Strings Attached.'”
But it wasn’t all ‘N Sync. The early days of the group had them doing covers of other favorites of theirs including Elvis Presley, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, and Fall Out Boy (who, ironically, they will be sharing the bill with coming up at a festival in San Diego in two weeks). It’s also a widely known fact that they learned to play guitar from watching Fall Out Boy videos.
Even with their own stars on the rise they still have their very own geek out moments when meeting certain celebrities, such as President and Michelle Obama who they met just last week at the White House Easter Egg Roll.
“Meeting the President and the First Lady, they were so, so nice. They were very, very welcoming. It was so cool,” they said.
And speaking of celebs, they have their own celeb connection with their cousins, dancers Julianne and Derek Hough. That led me to wonder if any of them had ever been approached about appearing on Dancing with the Stars.
“They asked me a while back,” said Ross, who can also be seen on the Disney Channel’s Austin & Ally as Austin Moon as well as in Disney Channel’s Teen Beach Movie. “But I didn’t find it fitting at the time just because we had so much going on and I didn’t want to have to try and fit one more thing into my schedule.”
And what is it that R5 are listening to themselves these days? “Okay, check this out, Future Islands’ ‘Seasons (Waiting On You),'” gushed Ross. “That song is awesome!” Riker had his own favorite with the new album from Neon Trees, and Rocky’s loving “Come With Me Now” from the Kongos.
Before we had to hang up, sister Rydel Lynch and BFF Ellington Ratliff made it onto the call as well. I was curious what it was like for Rydel to be surrounded by so much testosterone!
“I’m so used to it since I’ve been around it my whole life,” she said. “It’s great fun for me actually. They’re very entertaining and they are constantly doing crazy funny things, so it’s awesome.” (Fun little known fact about Rydel…she has her own personal song on each album!)
