Hear Deadmau5 and Richie Hawtin’s Tag-Team DJ Set from SXSW 2013

By Scott Sterling

While seemingly light-years apart musically, Deadmau5 and techno icon Richie Hawtin actually have a lot in common. From their Canadian origins to both being at the forefront of electronic music technology, meticulously constructing digital dance tracks that appeal to hardcore (almost to the point of cult-like) fan bases.

Last year, the pair came together in Austin, Texas, for the 2013 SXSW music conference, where after sharing a seminar stage to reflect on the state of dance music they hit Stubb’s to perform a special tag-team DJ set that Hawtin recently posted to his SoundCloud page.

The nearly two-hour set finds the guys meeting in the middle of their distinct sounds to create a driving, minimal techno mix heavy on dub effects and deep bass lines. Listen to it here.

“Probably how we first bonded was we’re two kids — or we were two kids — who found a love of technology and communicating through technology … that took us to a place where we never imagined we’d be today,” Hawtin said during the SXSW seminar (via Toronto Star). “It’s probably because we’re both geeks. We feel pretty cool with computers rather than people sometimes.”

Deadmau5 recently issued the track “Sunspot (White Space Conflict)” under the alias testpilot on Hawtin’s legendary Plus 8 label, the first release on that imprint in more than a year.
