Rick Ross Compares Himself To Trayvon Martin On New Track, ‘I Wonder Why’

With his latest track, “I Wonder Why,” Rick Ross looks at the life of Trayvon Martin and how easily it could have been his own.

On the song, off Ross’ Maybach Music Group’s compilation Self Made Vol. 3, out September 17, the rapper talks about his drug dealing past and questions why he didn’t meet the same fate as Martin over a dark, menacing beat.

The 17-year-old was shot to death on February 26, 2012 in Florida and Ross comments on gun violence rapping, “Two different pistols/ One with registered and one to get your issue.”

Ross, who also grew up in Florida, references the controversial Stand Your Ground law, which states a person may justifiably use force in self-defense if there is reasonable belief that they are being threatened. Many believe the 2005 statute played a role in the acquittal of George Zimmerman.

“Now I’m being followed by some creepy ass cracker,” he raps. “Stand your ground/ stand your ground/ stand your ground/ you gotta stand your ground.”

The line comes from testimony given by Rachel Jeantel, a friend of Martin’s who was on the phone with the teen during the altercation between him and Zimmerman. The song ends with audio taken from Jeantel’s testimony.
