You might not recognize the man or the mane (LOL) in the video above, but you should, because he has the current number one song in the country. You might have heard of it: it’s called “Blurred Lines.” Ye,s that’s Robin Thicke at the start of his music career when he just went by his last name Thicke.

Robin Thicke has certainly come a long, long way since his debut in 2002, and we’re going to look at his transition from a bicycle riding, Beethoven sampling hipster to a full blown pop star, and household name, who has the longest running #1 single of 2013 with ‘Lines.’

After being signed to Pharrell Williams‘ Star Trak record label, Thicke got rid of his golden locks and released a mid-tempo single which featured his boss Pharrell, “Wanna Love You Girl:”

This was the lead single for his Evolution of Robin Thicke album, but it wasn’t until the second single that Robin began gaining critical acclaim. On January 7, 2007, Thicke released what would then be the biggest single of his career, “Lost Without You,” which saw him become the first Caucasian male artist since George Michael to have a number 1 song on the Billboard Hot Hip Hop & R&B charts.

Following the success of ‘Lost,’ Thicke stayed in the Urban Contemporary lane for quite some time beginning with his Something Else album which featured lead single “Magic:”

For the title track to his Sex Therapy album, he played it safe and stayed with that same style.

Then “it” happened. What is “it” you ask? The first single for Justin Timberlake‘s 20/20 Experience, “Suit & Tie,” was released. When the song was released everybody talked about how JT’s new music sounded similar to Thicke’s. All sorts of jokes were out there; everything from “Justin Thicke” to “Robin Timberlake” was thrown around to describe the sound of JT’s new music. Many also said that JT was trying to step on Thicke’s musical toes with his sound. So what does Robin do? He stepped into JT’s lane, with the help of former JT collaborator Pharrell, and went ultra-pop, where many expected Timberlake to go when he released new music. And what was the end result? “Blurred Lines” has been the biggest single of his career to date. Not only is this his first single to reach #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, but it is also the single that has spent the most time at the Billboard summit so far in 2013. Blurred Lines the album will be released this Tuesday (July 30th), and I would expect for it to give Thicke his highest first week sales of his career, and potentially his first number 1 album. Evolution is always a good thing for artists. It will be interesting to see how he’s evolved on this new album. For now, he enjoys the top single in the country!
