Super Bowl XLVII For Dummies: A Big Game Primer For The Football Illiterate
The Super Bowl is this Sunday and whether you’re a huge fan of the NFL or you don’t know who is playing in the game, you’ll probably find yourself in front of the tube with friends and family this weekend staring at the game. If you are looking forward more to the commercials than the game, we thought we’d put together a guide to help you get through the pain of all the game play on Sunday.
This year is Super Bowl XLVII. Those letters are called Roman numerals. They mean 47.
(That trophy goes to the winner of the game. It’s called the Lombardi Trophy. It’s named for Vince Lombardi. He was a football coach.)
The game is being played in New Orleans at the Superdome.
It will be the 10th Super Bowl held in New Orleans at the Superdome since 1970, tying New Orleans with Miami for the most by a single location.
The teams playing are the San Francisco 49ers
and the Baltimore Ravens.
The 49ers will be wearing red jerseys and gold pants with a gold helmet
The Ravens will be wearing white jerseys with black pants and a black helmet.
The Coaches – 49ers – Jim Harbaugh
Giants – John Harbaugh
The Harbaughs are brothers. John is the oldest (50) and brother Jim (49) is 15 months younger. This is the first time ever that coaching brothers have squared off in the Super Bowl.
Starting Quarterbacks – 49ers – Colin Kaepernick #7
Ravens – Joe Flacco #5
A touchdown (the ball carried or caught in the end zone) is worth 6 points.
A field goal (ball kicked through the uprights) is worth 3 points.
An extra point (kicked like a field goal only after a touchdown is scored) is worth 1 point.
When the quarterback gets tackled with the ball it is called a sack.
The game is on CBS (check your local listings or cable provider). Click here for online coverage.
Members of the CBS Sports Super Bowl crew include (back row) Shannon Sharpe, Bill Cower, James Brown, Boomer Esiason, Jim Nantz- (front row) Dan Marino, Sean McManus and Phil Simms.
Beyonce will be playing the half time show. No word yet on whether lip-synching will be involved.
She’s expected to be joined by her former group, Destiny’s Child.
A few phrases you can say during the game to make yourself feel smart:
If a flag is thrown and holding is called say “Come on ref, that wasn’t holding”
If a defender touches a receiver before he catches a pass say, “That’s pass interference!”
Enjoy the game! And the commercials!
