Every year it happens, that one (or in this case 10) songs get stuck in your head. You usually hate them, but they’re so damn catchy that you can’t help but sing them when they’re on. You sing them in the car, sing them in the shower, sing them at church, sing them….. well you get the picture.
Like I said with my Top 10 JAMZ of 2012, these are MY 10 catchiest songs of 2012, not 102 JAMZ’, and not YOUR list. As with the other list, fell free to tell my your catchiest song in the comments or on Twitter @itsMeanJean!
10. “What Makes You Beautiful” — One Direction
Don’t tell Melony I said this, but this song literally makes my ears hurt. With that being said, anytime I heard it, at least an hour later I’d be singing or humming this song (not by choice of course).
Faded….. Faded….. Faded….. Any song that says one word over and over is guarenteed to have you singing along for hours. It also helps that it’s so easy to remember the words when you are actually drunk (or faded).
8. “Starships” — Nicki Minaj
This was my selection for most annoying song of 2012, but like all of the other songs on this countdown, anytime I heard it, it was embedded in my brain for a decent while after. Let’s not also talk about when the beat drops how I’d fist-pump. Only in the studio when no one else was around though (just sayin’).
7. “Gangnam Style” — Psy
I am not sure how or why this song has gotten as popular as it has, and it still baffles me anytime someone calls up to the station and requests it. Somehow, even though most people have no idea what he’s saying, I’d still hear people, myself included, jammin’ to the part that we all know; “heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy sexy ladies.”
6. “Ca$hin’ Out” — Ca$h Out
This song came out of nowhere and was a summer anthem. Ca$h Out had everybody “ridin’ ’round wit’ that Nina and smoking on that Keisha,” even though I didn’t (and still don’t) know what that means.
5. “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” — Kelly Clarkson
This was one of D Strong‘s favorite JAMZ of the year, and it definitely had staying power inside the brain. With such a simple hook that had a good message it’s easy to see why this one was so high on the list. Kelly Clarkson got 3 Grammy nominations for the song, so apparently it didn’t kill her (see what I did there)? No? Ok, forget it.
4. “Somebody That I Used to Know” — Gotye
The most popular song of 2012 had to make the list, just for the fact that I don’t think there are many people in America that haven’t heard it. With that being said, there ‘s no way it couldn’t get stuck in your head just for the number of times that everybody heard it.
3. “I’m Different” — 2 Chainz
I originally had this song at number 8 on the list, but after going to the bowl game at the Citrus Bowl, one of the people I was with single-handedly caused the song to jump five spots. Besides the fact that I can’t go a day without seeing someone tweet a lyric of the song, or the fact that I can’t ever listen to it just once (I have to replay it every time, EVERY TIME), and that this song seems to ALWAYS be stuck in my head. I went to the bowl game with a buddy of mine and one of his boys literally sang this song the whole four hours that we were around each other. That’s catchy.
Besides the fact that her label didn’t want her to release this song, for obvious reasons, and the fact that you still can’t purchase this song on iTunes, this song has that whole repetition thing down to the tee, which leads to people singing it non-stop. To this day, if someone asks me if I want a piece of cake I hear, “Do you want some cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake.” No lie I, think I’ll be scarred for the rest of my life.
1. “Call Me Maybe” — Carle Rae Jepsen
If you expected any song other than this at the number one spot, get your head checked. This one had everyone from the Harvard baseball team to the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders, to the employees at LA’s STAPLES Center making videos jammin’ out to it. Let’s test my selection out, “Hey I just met you and this is crazy……..” if the words, “but here’s my number so call me maybe,” just ran through your mind you’ve made my point.
There are my Top 10 catchiest songs of the year. I am sorry that you will now have a weird mix of all of these songs running through your brain. “I’m cashin’ out cause I’m different so get me some cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, cake, and call me maybe?” Did I miss anything or was my list spot on?
