The Game, a self-described gangster rapper, has seen the light. The controversial MC recently explained why he turned to God as the inspiration for his new album.
Game’s new album, which was originally titled V (Roman numeral 5), has been rechristened Jesus Piece to show his new dedication to religion.
“Last year in August, I got Baptized,” he told Jenny Boom Boom, from Hartford CT/ Hot 93.7. “I been gone to church but I’ve still been doing me. I still love the strip clubs I still smoke and drink. And I’m faithful to my family. But everybody loves God, even the most gangster of gangsters loves Jesus.”
The new inspiration touched his artistic sensibilities but, he admits, it didn’t completely change his lifestyle. As a vocal member of the Blood gang, The Game has been recently taped himself in a physical altercation with rival 40 Glocc.
“I am still gang affiliated,” he continued. “I’m not trying to change or hide being a Blood or growing up the way I grow up…I do my thing, but that doesn’t mean I can’t go to heaven or I don’t believe in God and that I can’t pick up a Bible when I get home. It don’t got nothing to do with that.”
According to Game, Jesus Piece will feature some of today’s biggest names in music, including Kanye West, Chris Brown, Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne. After recoring the title track with Kanye West, he decided to reconstruct the album’s content to reflect a more spiritual take. He also scrapped the original the album title, V, to avoid comparisons with Trey Songz album Chapter V.
“I had to talk to Trey Songz and he agreed he stole it so he agreed to get on the album, which is cool,” he said. “He’s on one of my singles. He killed that.”
As for his newfound religion, The Game said that he goes to church but he has no plan of abandoning rap to lead one, the way Harlem rapper Ma$e did in 1999.
“The last thing I want people to understand is, in no way shape of form am I starting a church or am I Pastor Mason,” he said. “I get it poppin’, I was in the strip club last night with Southern chicken wings and some fries.”
Jesus Piece is scheduled for a fourth quater release, “just before Christmas,” according to Game. Listen to the complete interview here where Game goes into detail about his album, his new reality show and his beef with 40 Glocc, here. —Erik Parker, CBS Local
