Nas is ready to turn the page. At least that’s the underlining premise of his deeply personal video “Bye Baby,” the latest single from his critically-acclaimed album Life Is Good.
The unfiltered clip, directed by Aristotle, follows a reflective Nas as he details his painful divorce with alternative R&B performer Kelis.
The celebrated lyricist, wearing a crisp white suit, gives a nod to Life Is Good’s now infamous album cover—a pensive Nas is seated with his ex-wife’s green wedding dress laid out across his knee. From there, Nas remembers the good times as he watches old wedding movies; angrily rummages through clothes in ex-wife Kelis’ closet; and signs divorce papers amid lawyers and a Kelis look-alike. Nas is even joined by former Guy vocalist Aaron Hall, whose emotional vocals anchors the chorus for “Bye Baby.” Finally, the man who first came to prominence with 1994’s now landmark hip-hop classic Illmatic makes an optimistic toast as he is surrounded by friends. Life is indeed good.
The Life Is Good rapper recently explained to CBS Local why he decided to make such a personal record.
“What’s ill man, is this is a record that kids are going to be like, ‘I dont need this,’” he said. “We might not reach certain people. But I think we will reach the right people. I am a 38-year-old dude so I’m talking about life from that perspective.”
