Don’t call her “Ms.” – she’s just not into it. “DJ” is the preferred prefix of Australian Havana Brown, who has been mixing for over six years and is now coming into her own as she transitions to an artist in her own right.
“I’m DJ-ing, MC-ing, playing my own tracks then going out there and performing. I’m out there multi-tasking – that’s what us women do best,” she told Energy 103.7/San Diego in an interview.
In addition to her current hit “We Run the Night” with Pitbull, she has also remixed famous tracks by other heavyweight artists. Does this make her nervous?
“Absolutely. But I wouldn’t mark any track as ‘finished’ until I was completely proud of it. It’s the same with my music: I’m so proud of everything we’ve released.”
With this degree of perfectionism, you’d think Havana Brown would have a pet peeve when it comes to her art.
“It is easy to be a DJ, but it’s hard to be a good DJ. Some people just ‘get-it’ musically, know where to change and what songs to play. Others don’t. Cutting songs in the middle of a verse is just the biggest no-no to me,” she said.
So what does she want to be known for years from now?
“I’d love to be known as one of the biggest DJs with the best music. The way I see someone like Janet Jackson: she’s not a DJ, but she’s legendary. She always had great music, great performances, great videos, great dancing, great energy.”
“I just want to continually be putting out great music that people like. It’s my passion, it’s what I love to do and I’ve worked extremely hard to get to this point – there’s no way I’m ready to stop anytime soon.”
