Common joins the list of celebrities such as Oprah and Beyonce who have been inspired by Gabby Douglas’ Olympic performance. But he’s also been following the big wins for his tennis champ ex, Serena Williams. He recently offered his congratulations and support to the Crip-walking gold medalist.

He praised Serena and sister Venus for their Olympic dominance.

“Congratulations to those queens,” he told Hot 93.7‘s DJ Buck and Nancy B. “It’s fun to watch these sisters who accomplished so much already, both be able to get another gold medal. And Serena to get a single gold medal… doing the crip walk and everything.”

While they are no longer romantically involved, Common offered only kind words for Serena.

“She was a champion before Common, and she’s a champion after Common,” he declared.

Gymnast Gabby Douglas has proven to be an inspiration to Common as well, like she is to so many others. “It makes you root for your country, you feel proud to be from this country and see the hard work they put in,” said Common. “Congratulations to Gabby Douglas and all the American athletes that have won and even competed.”

Common is also following basketball and track. Champion Usain Bolt’s impressive 100 meter win particularly impressed him.

“It looks easy, what hes doing,” he said of the four-time Olympic Gold Medalist. “You don’t realize how fast that man’s running.”

And watching the Olympics inspires Common to step up his own game.

“I was watching swimming the other day thinking ‘Man, I can swim like that’,” he joked. “I got in the pool, and I was huffing and puffing. [What they do] is incredible.”  –Bill Sencio, CBS Local/Hartford
