With over 80,000 Twitter followers, over 500,000 likes on Facebook, and over 77 million YouTube views, sixteen-year-old San Antonio, Texas native Austin Mahone easily qualifies for the title of the “next big thing.”
Austin recently stopped by 102 JAMZ to meet music director Melony Torres, giving her a glimpse inside the life of a budding young superstar and serenading her with an acoustic performance of his first single, “Say Somethin.”
Much like his musical inspiration Justin Bieber, Austin got his start via the amazing power of YouTube, starting off on a channel with his friend Alex, and then branching out to his very own channel featuring song covers. Referring to his ever-growing fan base, which call themselves “Mahomies,” Mahone says, “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for my fans because they’re so amazing.”
With his first single, “Say Somethin,” Melony sensed that maybe he was feeling a little frustration with girls, but he assured her that wasn’t the case. “No, not frustrated. Just sayin’, if you’re feeling the vibe, say somethin.”
An official video for “Say Somethin” is set to be shot next week and Austin hints at a beach setting. But who will be playing the “super hot, fire hot” beach babe referred to in the song’s lyrics? According to Austin the role is yet to be cast.
Listen to the complete interview below, and pay close attention at the 3:40 mark as Austin gets a taste of the “fruity mic”!
While there are plenty of girls dying to go on a date with Austin, he admits that he’s somewhat inexperienced in the field of dating. “My first date was kind of awkward. Because, like, it was kind of like a double date,” he said. “It was weird. I haven’t gone on many dates because, you know, just been moving a lot and doing my own thing.”
When it comes to the go to summer pop song for 2012, Austin is sticking with his very own “Say Somethin,” although he lists a variety of artists currently residing on his iPod. “I have a lot of Drake, I have a lot of Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, JB, Ne-Yo, Dirty Mike and the Boys, Usher…just got his new album.” And his favorite song from Usher’s latest? “Climax. It’s such a good song. His falsetto just kills it.”
And girls, take this as a warning. If you’re a huge bookworm, you might want to avoid the topic of literature if you ever get the chance to speak with Austin. While he definitely knows his music, the books…not so much. When Melony asked for the last good book he read, Austin responded, “Probably ‘The Time Machine.’ And I read that when I was in like 4th grade or 5th grade. I can’t remember.”
