Black History Month Fast Facts: Nina Simone

All month long in February, we’re celebrating Black History Month! Before [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alicia Keys[/lastfm], there was another legendary R&B singer and pianist named [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nina Simone[/lastfm].

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nina Simone[/lastfm] was born Eunice Kathleen Waymon in North Caroline on February 21, 1933. [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nina Simone[/lastfm] was an American jazz, blues, r&b, and soul singer originally from North Carolina. She had a wide range of musical styles ranging from gospel to classical.

In 1987 Nina recorded My Baby Just Cares For Me which became a huge success and was featured in a Chanel No. 5 perfume commercial. In 1958, Nina Simone’s I Love You, Porgy peeked at #18 on the pop charts and #2 on the black singles charts. Later in life Nina Simone became a civil rights activist.

[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Nina Simone[/lastfm] passed away in 2003 at her home in France after succumbing to breast cancer. Nina Simone has paved the way for many classical, gospel, and r&b musicians such as [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]India Arie[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Alicia Keys[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Angie Stone[/lastfm].
