Yes you are reading the headline correct! Dwight Howard did dunk on a giraffe in Japan! But has he fouled in the process?
According to MSN.com:
Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard is apparently tired of squaring off with the NBA’s inferior talent in the paint, so he’s taken to the animal kingdom in search of more worthy competition.
Well, sort of.
Howard, the league’s top big man, made a stop at Roppongi Hills — a Tokyo shopping mall — on a recent promotional tour through Japan, and while there, the former dunk-contest champion and three-time defensive player of the year dunked on a giraffe.
OK, so it wasn’t a real giraffe, but the dunk still made for a humorous scene as the 6-foot-11 Howard sized up the 12-foot giraffe statue — which had a basketball hoop coming out of its neck — hyped up the crowd, and then elevated for a one-handed jam.
It wasn’t the first time Howard has dunked on a non-regulation rim for show.
Howard’s latest dunk was reminiscent of his dunk on a 12-foot rim during the 2009 NBA Slam Dunk Contest (although the 2009 dunk, unlike his giraffe slam, was a two-handed affair).
Howard also famously executed a “sticker dunk” during the 2007 dunk contest, slapping a sticker of his own face at the top of a regulation backboard with his left hand while he dunked on the rim below with his right.
Earlier this summer, Howard suggested that he might go play in Asia to keep himself fresh and develop his skills in the event of a prolonged NBA lockout. However, he later backed off on that statement and said he’d prefer to stay stateside and continue his work with NBA Hall of Famer Hakeem Olajuwon.
Though there would have been great financial incentive for Howard to play in China or Japan, his decision to stay home probably was for the best one for everyone involved — Howard, the NBA and the players in whichever league he may have joined.
Now you can add a giraffe to that list, as well.
The NBA needs to end this lock out asap!! If not? We are gonna be seeing more stunts and crazy antics like this!
