Our friends in LA sat down the the hottest new rapper on the scene and they’re sharing their life changing experience with your. Meet VMA Best New Artist Nominee Kreyshawn.
It all started with a video one of my friends posted on Facebook a while back. There was just something about the girl I saw wearing the Mickey ears and the giant gold bamboo door knocker earrings.
I had to watch “Gucci Gucci,” and from that moment on, I’ve been digging [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kreayshawn[/lastfm]!
I couldn’t wait to find out more about her style, her album, even her first VMA nomination. Kreayshawn stopped by the AMP Radio studios to hang out, answer every last question I had, and show her true swag.
[pullquote quote=”I didn’t know it would be signing a record deal that would seal the deal right there.”]Michelle: It’s Michelle with one of my favorite new artists. Kreayshawn’s here.
Kreayshawn: Hey, how are you?
Michelle: I’m good. I’m glad that you’re here finally.
Kreayshawn: I’m one of your new favorite artists?
Kreayshawn: That’s so sweet!
Michelle: I’ve been fighting the fight for “Gucci Gucci.”
Kreayshawn: Yeah, you’ve been socking people in the mouth and stuff?
Michelle: No, I went down to my boss and I kind of rapped the whole thing. Not like you, but I gave it my best shot.
Kreayshawn: Well, how did he like it?
Michelle: He liked it! He was like ‘Oh, damn. What is this? What’s going on?’
Kreayshawn: Oh, yeah. He’s gotta know about it. We mobbin’.
Michelle: I had to go school him on it a little bit.
Kreayshawn: Yep, girl gang.
Michelle: Seriously, this has been a whirlwind for you all of a sudden.
Kreayshawn: Yeah, definitely was like, you know, you do something and then you put it out and then it just blows up like crazy.
Michelle: Did you expect that?
Kreayshawn: No, who expects things like that?
Michelle: I mean, obviously you’d hope for it, but…
Kreayshawn: Yeah, I mean, of course I was hoping for like something to change in my life, you know, but I didn’t know it would be signing a record deal that would seal the deal right there.
Michelle: How is that with your friends and stuff? Are they just like ‘What is going on?’
Kreayshawn: Yeah, they don’t understand when I’m like doing press and stuff like that. And they’re like, ‘Why can’t I come?’ And I’m like, ‘Why would you want to?’
Michelle: All this glamor.
Kreayshawn: All this glamor right here. Couple people taking a little picture. Of course I enjoy it. I love talking and stuff like that. But friends…my manager told me that’s the hardest thing I’m gonna have to deal with. And it is.
Michelle: It’s an adjustment. I think you’ll be OK with it though.
Kreayshawn: Yeah. I’ll survive.
Michelle: So, the single is totally blowing up. I know you’ve said…I follow you on Twitter so I know some of your business. I mean, it’s not personal business, you put it out there, but you’ve been saying that you’ve been finishing up all the songs. Are they all finished?
Kreayshawn: Well, yeah. You know, we got a lot of stuff that we’re almost ready to record, you know what I’m saying? You know, I like to go into the studio knowing exactly what I’m doing before I go in there. That way I can just get in there and work. So I mean, we have everything plotted out. And we’re just waiting for the time to get in there now so we can finish up this album.
[pullquote quote=”No, but that’s my partner. He always hits me up. He gives me a lot of positive enforcement, you know what I’m saying? ” credit=”-on Drake”]Michelle: You’ve gotta book some studio time.
Kreayshawn: Yep. You’ve gotta make time for the time.
Michelle: Are you going to be collaborating with anybody?
Kreayshawn: Umm. As far as right now, I don’t have any collabs, but as far as the album, I just want to establish myself as an artist. ‘Cuz there’s been a lot, a lot of offers.
Michelle: I heard Drake wants to collaborate with you, now c’mon.
Kreayshawn: I don’t know what kind of collaboration he might want to do. It might not be a song. No, but that’s my partner. He always hits me up. He gives me a lot of positive enforcement, you know what I’m saying? When I’m down, he’s like ‘ Oh. I’ve been there.’
Michelle: That’s amazing.
Kreayshawn: He’s like Grandpa Drake.
Michelle: How did that even come about? How does Drake just start blowing you up one day?
Kreayshawn: It’s just like, you’re all on Twitter. You know word of mouth. He works with The Weeknd, The Weeknd’s heard of me and it’s just, like, we all hear about each other and that’s just kinda how things go. We’re all young and fun, you know.
Michelle: I mean, I could blow you up on Twitter for a collaboration but it probably wouldn’t get the reach that Drake did..No, that’s so cool. You know, I thought it was awesome that Lil Wayne…I was gonna say, I don’t know if you wanna call it a shout out or a cover or what, but he basically did his thing over the track. Were you just freaking out about that?
Kreayshawn: I was super freaked out because, you know, I’ve been listening to Lil Wayne forever. Since he was a little baby. When he was a little 15-year-old rapper…It was like Prince covering your song in the hip-hop world, you know what I’m saying? It’s pretty clean.
Michelle: Yeah, that’s so hot. As soon as I heard that, I saw online and I had to click it, immediately…It was super hot….Um, OK. So we don’t know exactly when the CD is going to come out yet.
[pullquote quote=”You’re going to have to mug somebody in line for your tickets.” credit=”-on her sold out Roxy show”]Kreayshawn: No, I wish I knew right now. But I don’t have a date.
Michelle: I wish you did too…You’ve been doing some tour dates here and there.
Kreayshawn: Yeah.I have a little tour. It’s like a little five day tour. I’m going to L.A., New York.
Michelle: You’re going to be at the Roxy.
Kreayshawn: Hey, already sold out!
Michelle: August 27th!
Kreayshawn: Can’t get your tickets. You’re going to have to mug somebody in line for your tickets. And we’re doing New York, L.A., San Francisco, Vancouver…Oh, Philly too. I’m doing Philly for the pop festival which happens to be on my birthday…So I have a birthday show. So I better have some presents Philly.
Michelle: Who do you want to go on tour with? Anybody?
Kreayshawn: Man, it’s hard because when you’re on tour you really get to know the real people so I can’t really be like I wanna go on tour with so-and-so and then you’re on tour with them and then you’re like, ‘Man, I wish I never said that on the radio. This guy’s crazy. This chick’s crazy. She’s slowing me down.’ No, but, you know, it’s good the way it is right now, you know. Just keep it simple because, you know, the more hands around, the more complicated it gets. That’s what I’ve been learning.
Michelle: Yeah, I agree. So, just on that note: Remember the beginning. Remember we were here.
Kreayshawn: Yes, I will.
Michelle: Thank you so much for coming in. Before you go, one more thing I have to know: Where do you get the earrings? Because I can’t find them anywhere?
Kreayshawn: I get these at the gold store, you know, because these are real gold. So, you know, you just go to any local, you know, Compton.
Michelle: What if I wanted them on a budget?
Kreayshawn: You know with gold sometimes they’ll let you haggle around. These were like three hundred, you know. But I wear them everyday.
[pullquote quote=”Wet ‘N Wild. I keep it very simple.” credit=”-on her eyeliner”]Michelle: No, I was looking for some, like, maybe not Forever 21 prices, but somewhere in the middle there.
Kreayshawn: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. You might wanna hit Slauson or something. The Swap Meet.
Michelle: Yeah, you’re the second person that’s told me that. Alright, now I know where to go.
Kreayshawn: We’ll go on a field trip together.
Michelle: Yeah, I’d love that. And I want you to school me a little bit on the make-up too.
Kreayshawn: Oh, the make-up, the eyeliner is Wet ‘N Wild, guys.
Michelle: No, shut up.
Kreayshawn: Wet ‘N Wild. I keep it very simple.
Michelle: Is it like a brush? Or is it a pen?
Kreayshawn: Yeah, it’s a little brush…I can’t go anywhere without it, man…Can’t try anything else. Nothing else works as good as Wet ‘N Wild.
Kreayshawn: Oh, and I’m nominated for Best New Artist for the VMAS!…Vote or die, man.
Michelle: How crazy is that?…What did you do when you got that call?
[pullquote quote=”Oh, and I’m nominated for Best New Artist for the VMAS!…Vote or die, man.”]Kreayshawn: I was at MTV and they did like this live announcement. They’re like, ‘We’re gonna interview you’ and this guy he puts the mic up to me, ‘So you’re nominated for Best New Artist for the VMAs, huh, how do you feel?’ And I’m like, ‘What?’
Michelle: They just put you on the spot like that?
Kreayshawn: Yeah, they like to get that fresh reaction. That honest face…So, I’m excited for that.
Michelle: Also, you just directed the Red Hot Chili Peppers video…That’s crazy by the way.
Kreayshawn: Yeah, that was almost more exciting than getting the deal signed. Just to have like that opportunity.
Michelle: Is that something that you want to do more of?
Kreayshawn: Yeah, definitely. You know, I can’t wait for the video to come out, so everyone else hits me up for videos too. Hey.
Michelle: Drake, we’re looking at you.
