Coachella 2011 Hip Hop Artist Spotlight: OFWGKTA, Wiz Khalifa, Nas And Lil B
All weekend our team in CA will be reporting from the polo fields of Coachella. Come back often. We’ll have exclusive video, photos and more!
Coming just as musically hard and lyrically fresh as a rock ‘n roll group, there are many hip-hop artists these days that are doing collaborations or are considered musical inspirations for some of our favorite artists. We are not ashamed to admit that we love hip-hop and are excited to see some of these amazing rappers at Coachella this year, including [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Nas[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Wiz Khalifa[/lastfm].
#1: OFWGKTA (or Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All)
There is a lot of hype behind OFWGKTA who the press have been saying are single-handedly taking hip-hop back to pre-mainstream roots. A collective of Los Angeles kids ranging between the ages of 17 and 21, Odd Future (for ease) is comprised of [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Tyler the Creator[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Earl Sweatshirt[/lastfm],[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”] Hodgy Beats[/lastfm], D[lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]omo Genesis[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Mike G[/lastfm], Frank Ocean, Left Brain, The Jet Age of Tomorrow, Syd tha Kyd, Jasper Loc and Taco Bennett.
These ten teenage skater kids–who are labeled “horrorcore” much to their dislike–have music critics and fans all over the world repeating with Tyler the Creator induced lyrical tourettes: “The Future is ODD” and “SWAG.” While they may have spurned a huge distaste of “swag” slang with the older generation, the lyrics of OFWGKTA are smart, emotional, pop-culture infused and deliciously raunchy.
Recently, Tyler the Creator and Hodgy Beats performed for the first time on late-night television for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.
