Album Review: Snoop Dogg’s “Doggumentary” Takes You Back

The entire album has a distinct and cohesive sound, that is reminiscent of Snoop’s earlier work with the Regulators, with many shout outs to LAcentric icons, a collaboration with Laker Kobe Bryant and, of course the lifestyle of being an old school gangsta.

Still, the track “Eyez Closed” is the most versatile track on the album.  It features superstars [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]Kanye West[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type=”artist_info”]John Legend[/lastfm] and somehow manages to have the perfect balance of what each artist brings to the table.

“Eyez Closed” has an obviously Kanyesque sound to it, but the addition of John Legend in the chorus and Snoop Dogg’s particular brand of rapping give the track a diversity that shows a new side to what Snoop Dogg is capable.

The saying goes, “You can’t teach and old dog new tricks,” abut for this Dogg, this isn’t true.

Snoop uses some of his old tricks, but manages to elevate not only his sound, but his reach by working with a multitude of new artists, continuing to qualify him as the Doggfather.
