grammys08 12 041 Mean Jeans GRAMMY Picks

Tonight is music’s biggest night; the GRAMMYs are tonight on CBS. I tried this last year and believe I did pretty well. [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Eminem[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bruno Mars[/lastfm], and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm] are the leading award nominees, with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Cee Lo[/lastfm] being nominated for a couple big awards as well! So I’m going to give you some of my predicted winners, who I want to win and why! So let’s get into it!

RECORD OF THE YEAR
“Nothin’ On You”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]B.o.B[/lastfm] featuring [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bruno Mars[/lastfm]
“Love The Way You Lie”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Eminem[/lastfm] featuring [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Rihanna[/lastfm]
“F*ck You”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Cee Lo Green[/lastfm]
“Empire State Of Mind”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jay-Z[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Alicia Keys[/lastfm]
“Need You Now”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Antebellum[/lastfm]

This one is a really tough one, and I could see any of them winning other than “Nothin’ On You,” it was a great song, but this is definitely one of those “it’s a pleasure to be nominated,” moment for these two guys (I’m just sayin’). It’s crazy that three of these songs are also nominated for Best Rap Song, and Best Rap/Sung Collab. Definitely a good look for Rap Music, it also cancels my theory about winning your category if you are nominated for one of the Big 4 awards.

Predicted Winner: “Love the Way You Lie”

Preferred Winner: “Empire State of Mind”

Usually the person who is nominated for the most awards gets at least one of the Big 4, so I’ll go with Eminem here. I would prefer ‘Empire State,’ as the winner though it was such a big sounding song, that I’d be disappointed if they don’t win something for it. I wouldn’t be surprised if “Need You Now,” took out their hip hop competition!

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
The Suburbs, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Arcade Fire[/lastfm]
Recovery, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Eminem[/lastfm]
Need You Now, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Antebellum[/lastfm]
The Fame Monster, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]
Teenage Dream, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Katy Perry[/lastfm]

Remember that Sesame Street “One of these things is not like the other,” how in the world did Katy Perry get an Album of the Year nod? Baffles the mind… I’ve only actually listened to two of these CD’s and one of them is going to be the one that I choose as the winner. Eminem’s album received great reviews, and he’s a GRAMMY favorite so I expect him to win here. Although I wouldn’t be surprised if the group I’ve never heard of wins, cause the GRAMMYs are notorious for having that who moment when some of the big awards are given out

Predicted Winner: Recovery

Preferred Winner: Recovery

A lot of people don’t know the difference between Song and Record of the Year, and neither did I until I Googled it. Record of the Year is about the song itself: production, performance, etc, Song of the Year is an award for the writers of the song. Some of the time it is not the same person, so it’s about the lyrics. Even though last year’s Song of the Year, had a lyric that said “I got gloss on my lips a man on my hips,” but that’s a whole different story lol.

SONG OF THE YEAR
“Beg Steal Or Borrow”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ray LaMontagne[/lastfm]
“F*ck You”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Cee Lo Green[/lastfm]
“The House That Built Me”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Miranda Lambert[/lastfm]
“Love the Way You Lie”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Eminem[/lastfm] featuring [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Rihanna[/lastfm]
“Need You Now”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Antebellum[/lastfm]

Anyway, I listened to all of these songs last night, and tried to look at the lyrics, and for this I’ll go w/ “Need You Now,” as the winner. It’s a country song that’s not too country sounding, and you can’t expect Hip Hop to win all of the big awards you have to switch it up!

Predicted Winner: “Need You Now”

Preferred Winner: “F*ck You” (It’s funny that Bruno Mars and his team actually wrote this song for him, I don’t think it would have been as well-received if he did it rather than Cee Lo)

BEST NEW ARTIST
[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Justin Bieber[/lastfm]
[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Drake[/lastfm]
[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Florence & The Machine[/lastfm]
[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Mumford & Sons[/lastfm]
[lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Esperanza Spalding[/lastfm]

First off if Justin Bieber wins this award I will never watch the GRAMMYs again, The person you don’t expect usually wins this award. I listened to a song by each of the artists that I didn’t know last night and I think Florence & The Machine will win.  I think she was the random red-headed lady that performed at the VMA’s so that shows she has some crossover appeal too.

Preferred Winner: Florence & The Machine

Predicted Winner: Florence & The Machine

BEST FEMALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“King Of Anything”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Sara Bareilles[/lastfm]
“Halo (Live)”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Beyonce[/lastfm]
“Chasing Pirates”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Norah Jones[/lastfm]
“Bad Romance”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]
“Teenage Dream”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Katy Perry[/lastfm]

I learned the hard way last year never to bet against Beyonce, but considering she won this award last year for the exact same song, I don’t think she’ll win. She either dominates the GRAMMYs or isn’t a big factor in the show, this year I’ll go with the latter. So considering I don’t have Gaga winning anything I think I’ll go with her here. Although I wouldn’t be surprised with Norah Jones winning here since she’s a GRAMMY favorite as well

Predicted Winner: “Bad Romance”

Preferred Winner: “Bad Romance”

BEST MALE POP VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“Haven’t Met You Yet”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Michael Bublé[/lastfm]
“This Is It”, [lastfm link_type=""]Michael Jackson[/lastfm]
“Whataya Want From Me”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Adam Lambert[/lastfm]
“Just The Way You Are”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bruno Mars[/lastfm]
“Half Of My Heart”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]John Mayer[/lastfm]

This one is a pretty tough category, where I can see anyone winning, besides maybe John Mayer. They are all good and very different songs, but one thing tips it for me. A lot of people that get nominated for after they pass away win them…

Predicted Winner: “This Is It”

Preferred Winner: “Just the Way You Are”

BEST POP PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCALS
“Don’t Stop Believin’ (Regionals Version)” [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Glee Cast[/lastfm]
“Misery”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Maroon 5[/lastfm]
“The Only Exception”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Paramore[/lastfm]
“Babyfather”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Sade[/lastfm]
“Hey, Soul Sister (Live)”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Train[/lastfm]

Another tough category, but I am surprised that Maroon 5 is nominated here, since I wasn’t too impressed with their latest single or album. Paramore is going through a rough breakup so I think that would be pretty awkward if they won. When you take one of the most popular TV shows and add that with one of the most popular songs ever, it’s not wise to bet against that.

Predicted Winner: “Don’t Stop Believin'”

Preferred Winner: “Hey Soul Sister”

BEST POP COLLABORATION WITH VOCALS
“Airplanes, Part II”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]B.o.B[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Eminem[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Hayley Williams[/lastfm]
“Imagine”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Herbie Hancock[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Pink[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]India.Arie[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Seal[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Konono No. 1[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jeff Beck[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Oumou Sangare[/lastfm]
“If It Wasn’t For Bad”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Elton John[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Leon Russell[/lastfm]
“Telephone”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Beyoncé[/lastfm]
“California Gurls”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Katy Perry[/lastfm] & [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Snoop Dogg[/lastfm]

When you have Gaga & Beyonce it’s pretty hard to bet against them, but I will here although it’s not the brightest idea. Herbie Hancock was one of those who moments I was talking about when they beat Kanye West, Amy Winehouse, and the Foo Fighters for Album of the Year in 2008. So I expect them to have another one here.

Predicted Winner: “Imagine”

Preferred Winner: “Airplanes”

BEST POP ALBUM
My World 2.0, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Justin Bieber[/lastfm]
I Dreamed A Dream, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Susan Boyle[/lastfm]
The Fame Monster, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]
Battle Studies, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]John Mayer[/lastfm]
Teenage Dream, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Katy Perry[/lastfm]

Any artist that’s nominated for Album of the Year has to win their genre’s category or else they have no shot at winning Album of the Year, if they didn’t have the best album in their genre. That’s why I still believe the whole Taylor Swift-Kanye West drama was somehow setup. If Beyonce didn’t have the Best Female video that year how was the same video Video of the Year? Doesn’t make any sense in my opinion

Predicted Winner: The Fame Monster

Preferred Winner: The Fame Monster

BEST DANCE RECORDING
“Rocket”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Goldfrapp[/lastfm]
“In For The Kill”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]La Roux[/lastfm]
“Dance In The Dark”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Lady Gaga[/lastfm]
“Only Girl (In The World)”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Rihanna[/lastfm]
“Dancing On My Own”, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Robyn[/lastfm]

Never bet against Gaga #thatisall

Predicted Winner: “Dance in the Dark”

Preferred Winner “Dance in the Dark”

BEST ELECTRONIC/DANCE ALBUM
These Hopeful Machines, BT
Further, The Chemical Brothers
Head First, Goldfrapp
Black Light, Groove Armada
La Roux, La Roux

I’m sure I’ve heard songs by these artists in a club somewhere, but never a whole album… I will say though that last year David Guetta got robbed of this award, his album was better than Lady Gaga’s

Predicted Winner: La Roux Preferred Winner: La Roux

BEST FEMALE R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“Gone Already”, Faith Evans
“Bittersweet”, Fantasia
“Everything To Me”, Monica
“Tired”, Kelly Price
“Holding You Down (Going In Circles)”, Jazmine Sullivan

Everyone that knows me knows that Monica is one of my favorite artists, but her performance if this song was on point. I also feel as though she’s pretty underrated as an artist. I feel as though this will be like Mary J finally winning a Grammy a few years back and she’ll pick up one tonight. I will say though that I’m surprised that Alicia Keys didn’t get any nominations for her solo stuff this year, since “Unbreakable,” was so popular and she is an artist that usually gets nominated for everything. Props to Fantasia and Jazmine Sullivan too they had those two tracks were hits!

Predicted Winner: “Everything to Me” Preferred Winner: “Everything to Me”

BEST MALE R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“Second Chance”, El DeBarge
“Finding My Way Back”, Jaheim
“Why Would You Stay”, Kem
“We’re Still Friends”, (Kirk Whalum &) Musiq Soulchild
“There Goes My Baby”, Usher

Usher changes his style completely and almost gets shut out from nominations, interesting. He is also a Grammy favorite so I’ll go with him here.

Predicted Winner: “There Goes My Baby” Preferred Winner: “There Goes My Baby”

BEST R&B PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP WITH VOCALS
“Take My Time”, Chris Brown & Tank
“Love”, Chuck Brown, Jill Scott & Marcus Miller
“You’ve Got A Friend”, Ronald Isley & Aretha Franklin
“Shine”, John Legend & The Roots
“Soldier Of Love”, Sade

I’ll go with Sade here for the win; they made their awaited comeback so they’ve got to pick up something. I will say though, I thought Sade was a solo artist, didn’t realize that they were a group.

Predicted Winner: “Soldier of Love” Preferred Winner “Soldier of Love”

BEST TRADITIONAL R&B VOCAL PERFORMANCE
“When A Woman Loves”, R. Kelly
“Hang On In There”, John Legend & The Roots
“You’re So Amazing”, Calvin Richardson
“In Between”, Ryan Shaw
“Go [Live]“, Betty Wright

John Legend is another Grammy favorite, and if you want to know what I mean by that, there are certain artists who always win awards. They usually are the ones who get the most nominations and win the most. It’s pretty annoying since I doubt that they are ALWAYS better than everyone else but it is what it is.

Predicted Winner “Hang on in There” Preferred Winner “Hang on in There”

BEST URBAN/ALTERNATIVE PERFORMANCE
“Little One”, Bilal
“F*ck You”, Cee Lo Green
“Orion”, Carolyn Malachi
“Tightrope”, Janelle Monáe & Big Boi
“Still”, Eric Roberson

Cee Lo is nominated for Song and Record of the Year so this one is easy

Predicted Winner: “F*ck You” Preferred Winner: “F*ck You”

BEST R&B SONG
“Bittersweet”, Fantasia
“Finding My Way Back”, Jaheim
“Second Chance”, El DeBarge
“Shine”, John Legend & The Roots
“Why Would You Stay,” Kem

This is another pretty good category, where I could see any of the nominees winning, but I’ll go with the most popular nominee, and pick Fantasia to beat out the guys out. Although listening to the SHMS when we had it at JAMZ made me appreciate “Why Would You Stay.”

Predicted Winner: “Bittersweet” Preferred Winner: “Why Would You Stay”

BEST R&B ALBUM
The Love & War Masterpeace, Raheem DeVaughn
Back To Me, Fantasia
Another Round, Jaheim
Wake Up!, John Legend & The Roots
Still Standing, Monica

Anyone who knows me knows who I want to win, and I went back and forth on who to pick, but I have to do it sorry. Call me a homer if you want it is what it is lol

Predicted Winner: Still Standing Preferred Winner: Still Standing

BEST CONTEMPORARY R&B ALBUM
Graffiti, Chris Brown
Untitled, R. Kelly
Transition, Ryan Leslie
The ArchAndroid, Janelle Monáe
Raymond V Raymond, Usher

I don’t think Usher should be in this category, since his album leaned more towards pop, so I don’t see him winning here, but I’ll go with Janelle Monae as she is a favorite in the industry right now

Predicted Winner: The ArchAndroid Preferred Winner: The ArchAndroid

BEST RAP SOLO PERFORMANCE
“Over”, Drake
“Not Afraid”, Eminem
“How Low”, Ludacris
“I’m Back”, T.I.
“Power”, Kanye West

This is a pretty tough category, but I’m not sure how T.I. made it in there as I thought his new effort was pretty weak. I think it between Kanye and Em, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Drake too it, don’t think he will though

Predicted Winner: “Not Afraid” Preferred Winner “Power”

BEST RAP PERFORMANCE BY A DUO OR GROUP
“Shutterbugg”, Big Boi & Cutty
“Fancy”, Drake, T.I. & Swizz Beatz
“On To The Next One”, Jay-Z & Swizz Beatz
“My Chick Bad”, Ludacris & Nicki Minaj
“Lose My Mind”, Young Jeezy & Plies

I’m surprised that Jeezy and Plies are in here, they are the opposite of Grammy favorites lol, but I guess if The Lonely Island can get nominated anyone can get nominated for Rap lol. Even though Big Boi is a “Grammy favorite,” I won’t go with him here, Nicki Minaj will probably be nominated for Best New Artist next year and I believe

Predicted Winner: “My Chick Bad” Preferred Winner “My Chick Bad”

BEST RAP/SUNG COLLABORATION
“Nothin’ On You”, B.o.B Featuring Bruno Mars
“Deuces”, Chris Brown, Tyga & Kevin McCall
“Love The Way You Lie”, Eminem & Rihanna
“Empire State Of Mind”, Jay-Z & Alicia Keys
“Wake Up! Everybody”, John Legend, The Roots, Melanie Fiona & Common

If you follow my rules, there are only three songs that could win this one, and although I’m sort of breaking my rule. I see each one of the songs here nominated for Record of the Year getting one award and this award allows the flexibility for that to happen.

Predicted Winner: “Nothin’ on You” Preferred Winner: “Deuces”

BEST RAP SONG
“Empire State of Mind”, Jay-Z & Alicia Keys
“Love the Way You Lie”, Eminem featuring Rihanna
“Not Afraid”, Eminem
“Nothin’ On You”, B.o.B. featuring Bruno Mars
“On to the Next One”, Jay-Z & Swizz Beatz

Wow, this category is two artist and B.o.B, and since I have “Love the Way You Lie,” winning Record of the Year this one is easy

Predicted Winner: “Love the Way You Lie” Preferred Winner “Empire State of Mind”

BEST RAP ALBUM
The Adventures Of Bobby Ray, B.o.B
Thank Me Later, Drake
Recovery, Eminem
The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z
How I Got Over, The Roots

Since 1999 Ludacris and Lil Wayne each won this award once, other than that it’s been either Outkasts, Jay Z, or Kanye West. So technically there are only two possible winners, but when you factor in that Eminem is nominated for Album of the Year the Grammy’s have already told him that he has the Best Rap Album.

Predicted Winner: Recovery Preferred Winner: BP3

I also predict that Christina Aguilera will redeem herself from that terrible Super Bowl performance with her tribute to Aretha!
