ces CES 2011: Day 1 Overview

CES opened today with the latest in smartphones, tablets, 3D, and so much more. The main hub of the convention is at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which was buzzing with excitement over the latest innovations for items that may very well wind up in your home. Verizon had a few announcements and Polaroid brought in a music super-star to introduce a new line of products.

Several wireless networks, including Sprint and Verizon, were touting their 4G networks along with new phones. During Verizon’s two keynotes today they presented 10 new 4G devices, including phones like the HTC Thunderbolt and Motorola Bionic. Verizon has also worked a deal with Skype to bring Skype apps to their phones that allow for phone to phone and phone to computer Skype video calls. The one phone that Verizon did not mention during either keynote? The iPhone. Sorry to those of you who are still hopeful for the Verizon iPhone – if the iPhone is coming to Verizon, it wasn’t introduced today!

samsung galaxy tab CES 2011: Day 1 Overview

Samsung Galaxy Tab 4G

Tablets can be found at nearly every booth this year at CES.  Samsung, Dell and many more manufacturers are showing off the latest in mobile computing. Samsung announced that its Galaxy Tab 4G is coming to Verizon as part of the wireless carrier’s 4G network (a wifi version of the Galaxy Tab was announced on Wednesday). This tablet has a 7 inch display, 5 megapixel rear-facing camera, a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, and will run Android 2.2 (Froyo). The Dell Streak was also announced – having many of the same specs as the Galaxy Tab, the Dell Streak will be available on T-Mobile and have access to live news, sports and entertainment via T-Mobile TV.

Innovations in 3D can also be found in many of the booths this year. Toshiba is certainly one of the leaders with their glasses-fee 3D televisions. The key to this latest technology is to experience 3D television without the nuisance of glasses. Another interesting sight came from InnoVision Labs who is playing around with 3D holographic projections. The image is created from a combination of a monitor, Flash video, a CPU processor (although they would not explain much more than that so they would not give anything away). The images produced were full 3-dimensional holograms and very reminiscent of Princess Leia’s message from Star Wars!

lady gaga CES 2011: Day 1 OverviewFinally, would you ever think to find many major stars at CES? There are many celebrities who go and blend in rather well, but one celebrity who helped Polaroid introduce a new line of products has never done well at blending in with the crowd – Lady Gaga! Polaroid and Lady Gaga teamed up on Polaroid’s “Grey Label”. The first product introduced were a set of sunglasses that not only protect your eyes, but can also take photos! She also introduced a pocket printer that is bluetooth compatible so you can take a photo and send the photo to the printer wirelessly. The final product was also a digital Polaroid camera that allows for instant printing of photos that are taken – a version of this camera is also being developed that will post your photos to Facebook, Twitter, and other social media sites.

The first day of CES is done, but there is much more to come. We’ll be posting more gadget-specific items the next few days, so keep checking on the latest in smartphones, tablets, 3D, and more!
