Have you ever listened to an album and drifted to another place?  Well that’s what happened to me when I zoned out to Kanye West’s “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.”  It’s crazy because when people ask me my thoughts on the album in regard to a recent album release, its hard to categorize Ye in the same category (as a general album release).  He is a genius – yes, impactful – yes but his work… is a conversation piece.

One of the various, "My Beautiful dark Twisted Fantasy" by Kanye West

Opening up with a British-voiced Nicki Minaj, he sets up an opera-like tone and/or plot for the album; which each song flowed into one another and extended with word-less instrumentals (similar to his prior album).  The tracks heard on the radio deserve to be there, have it be in rotation or sampled within a mixshow; Runaway, Monster, Power & All of the Lights (my personal fav!).  They are catchy and work with a direct message that listeners can relate to in one way or another.

The track titled “Gorgeous” will totally gain a cult like following and would produce an amazing live performance; carrying a heavy low vocal which I can see being preformed by a huge male choir surrounded by illustration that are so ugly that they are pretty.  My favorite line is “Is hip hop, just a euphemism for a new religion, the soul music for the slaves that the youth is missing.”
Another big record “line-up” wise is  “So Appalled “ feat. Jay-Z, Pusha T, Prynce Cy Hi, Swizz Beatz, and The RZA.. Imagine all that swag on one stage venting their hearts out – BANANAS!

However, Ye would not be the man we have grown to love without taking shots and perhaps making some nameless individual cry or public figure for that matter and he does it so eloquently with “Blame Game” .  On the record he goes back and forth, hence the title blame game (typical he said, she said premise) but the jabs he takes are hilarious.  And the banter is solidified with a outro skit by comedian Chris Rock, where he goes in about making, molding and “re-upholstering” this chic (who I think is Amber Rose…)

So after the great music, a few laughs and several memorizing moments; why did he name his 5th studio album “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy”? Mr. West says the title just came to him, which is a typical response but I will take it a step further.  The title has the making of a fiction novel, which takes you on a mental trip; it has character and literal illustrations, which transcends beyond just being a personal message from Kanye to his listener but its more of a “to be continued” chapter in the living saga we call Kanye West.
