Brooklyn was in the house Saturday night at Bonnaroo, when [lastfm]Jay-Z[/lastfm] took to the What Stage for his late-night headlining set. Jay treated the “cool hippies” to a monster show that bridged the gap between rock and hip-hop, with his ten-piece band jamming as hard as any of the rock acts that preceded him.

[photogallerylink id=10488 align=left]Jay paid respect to Saturday’s other main stage artists (“Jack White, I see ya boy, I see ya”) and then launched into a medley of tunes off his latest album The Blueprint 3. With Memphis Bleeck at his side he performed hits new and old, including “99 Problems”, “H to the Izzo”, “On to the Next One”, “Big Pimpin’,” and “Empire State of Mind.”

Each song led into the next, and before long Jay had used up nearly all of his two-hour time slot. Taking a quick breather before his last tune, he asked fans to put their lighters up and busted out his latest single “Forever Young.” Pausing mid-song to riff on Obama, Jay told the crowd, “Our generation changed the world!”

“Encore” was Jay’s choice for his own encore, the rock-infused track that he also released as a mashup with [lastfm]Linkin Park[/lastfm]. With the guitars blaring and the distortion turned way up, Jay-Z reminded the Bonnaroo masses that he’s bigger than hip-hop, bigger than any one style of music. Which is the core idea behind all of Bonnaroo – that good music is universal.
